Guerin vs. Brebeuf

Varsity

Here is our first Saturday game of the season. I find these a bit tricky as it’s out of the norm compared to an usual afterschool game. The girls had an eventful day leading up to the game as we tailgated and watched the football team do their job. Getting to the field I knew it would not be in the best of shape. The boys’ games prior to our game were cancelled as the visiting team refused to play. I wanted to play and I knew the girls wanted to play so we did not care about the conditions of the field. They were equal for both teams. With a different starting lineup, it took a few minutes for us to get comfortable. For the first 15 minutes it was a pretty equal game as both teams tried to get their footing. Around the 20 minute mark, we were on the wrong side of a penalty called on the edge of the box. That put the home team up 1-0. About 10 minutes later, they scored again after a miscommunication in our back-line. After some major adjustments at half-time, the girls came out hard in the second half. Thirteen minutes in, Shelby Kroeger found the ball at her feet and finished it to narrow the gap to 2-1. We continued to pressure the home side as we were fighting for the equalizing goal. On one of the few times they attacked on us in the second half they broke through again for the third goal. The girls did not give up. With 7 minutes left, Elise DeTrude found the back of the net with a free kick from just outside the box. We out shot our opponent 12-6, but did not do enough to get the win. Although we lost 3-2, the girls fought until the end and showed some much needed intensity throughout the second half.

Lost 2-3

Goals: Shelby Kroeger, Elise Detrude

Junior Varsity

The rain could not stop the Junior Varsity team Friday as they traveled to Guerin Catholic and brought home a 2-0 victory.  Slick conditions made for a messy game, but the girls held their own against physical competition.

In first half action, Anne Marshall dribbled the keeper from the left side of the box and slipped a ball into the corner of the goal making it a 1-0 game.  The girls played solid defense for the rest of the half and took the lead into halftime.

Early in the second half, Jennifer Dimos received a ball in the middle of the field for a one on one with the keeper, touched the ball to her left and into the goal.  After some confusion on the call the goal stood making the game 2-0.  Once again Amaris Grimme shut out the opponent before handing her gloves over to Stephanie Dimos, who had her own agenda in the goal.  After committing a foul in the box, she went on to make a diving save on the PK, saving the shut out for the Braves.   The game would end that way taking the team’s record to 4-0-1 on the season.

Won 2-0

Goals: Anne Marshall, Jennifer Dimos
